Not only is it a good way for your kids to stay healthy and active, it can be loads of fun too. With the winter winding down, it’s the perfect time to get your kids ready for the fun and excitement that comes with Spring. There’s no better way to do that than with yoga. That’s right.

Yoga is a great way for your kids to learn concentration and focus, while making fun movements with their bodies. Even better, it’s a fantastic way for you to take a little break while your kid(s) enjoy themselves. It’s a win-win.

Places to Take Your Kids (2)

Yoga to Grow
Yoga to Grow offers a child-centered, imaginative way for children to learn yoga in a nurturing, non-competitive environment. At Yoga to Grow, children are encouraged to explore and discover the mind and body in a fun-filled way.

Yoga to Grow classes are held at alleyCat Yoga in downtown Columbia and at the Kindermusik Studio. For more information, contact Susan Cooperstock phone at 864-4132 or by email at susan@yogatogrow.com.

Bowling centers, schools, and other community organizations work together to launch a super summer activity option for kids and families…in the first ever “Kids Bowl Free” program. This program is designed by bowling centers to give back to the community and provide a safe, secure, and fun way for kids to spend time this summer.

Children whose age does not exceed a limit by a participating bowling center are eligible to register for 2 free games a day, all summer long, courtesy of the participating bowling centers along with the schools and organizations.

How the program works:

All of the participating bowling centers are listed at http://www.kidsbowlfree.com/all_centers.php.

Select a bowling center near you.

Register directly on the bowling center page (The registration is valid only at the bowling center where you register and cannot be used at any other bowling center unless otherwise noted.)

Once you register, you will have the opportunity to purchase the family pass. The Family Pass was created to allow for adult family members to enjoy bowling throughout the summer as well. The Family Pass starts from $23.95 and includes 2 GAMES PER PERSON PER DAY. The Family Pass covers up to 4 adult family members. You may have 1, 2, 3, or 4 adults on the family pass.

When do you receive the coupons and family pass?

The “program start” and “program end” dates are listed on the bowling center page that you register with. You can sign up for the program before the start date, but the coupons and family passes will not be loaded into your account until the start date has occurred.

Once the program has begun, we will send you an email every Sunday morning that contains a link to your coupons and family passes for that week. It is not required that you view this email to print your coupons.

Simply login to your account at anytime once the program has started to print your coupons and family passes.

If you’re wondering why your neighbor has a nicer yard or garden than you do, they might have a dark little secret. Compost. That’s right. But, if you’re like me, you might not know how to get it, much less make it. We’re in luck. The city of Columbia is hosting a compost workshop this Spring where you can get everything you need to know about compost. And, the best part, it’s free. Check out the compost schedule below:

Tuesday, April 21st at 6:30 p.m.
Saturdays, May 23rd and June 13th at 10 a.m.

The Compost Workshops will be held at the Capen Park compost demonstration site, just off of Rock Quarry Road.

If you find that you don’t have the time or space to do it yourself, you can stop by Columbia’s compost facility at 5700 Peabody Road, on Wednesdays from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. (also available some Saturdays), where you can purchase it in bulk.

Compost is sold in bulk quantities for $12, plus tax, per cubic yard with a minimum $12 fee, plus tax. For more information, visit GoColumbiaMo.com.

Until about a month ago, it seemed like Columbia had only a one-in-a-million chance to win a $1 million makeover contest for its struggling animal shelter. But two teenage pet lovers are working to beat the odds.

Back in January, Libby Burks and Amanda Huhman, both 13-year-olds at Columbia Catholic School, discovered zootoo.com, a Web site that Libby’s mother, Liz Burks, described as a “Facebook site for pets.”

Users can post comments, questions, pictures and product reviews, and the site is also sponsoring its second $1 million makeover contest for one lucky shelter.

“It’s refreshing … that two young gals are doing this,” Liz Burks said. “We keep hearing so much about” the Central Missouri Humane Society, “how they need help and money.” Amanda and Libby “are not asking for a dime, just asking for a few minutes of your time.”
