Teens launch effort to give animal shelter makeover

Until about a month ago, it seemed like Columbia had only a one-in-a-million chance to win a $1 million makeover contest for its struggling animal shelter. But two teenage pet lovers are working to beat the odds.

Back in January, Libby Burks and Amanda Huhman, both 13-year-olds at Columbia Catholic School, discovered zootoo.com, a Web site that Libby’s mother, Liz Burks, described as a “Facebook site for pets.”

Users can post comments, questions, pictures and product reviews, and the site is also sponsoring its second $1 million makeover contest for one lucky shelter.

“It’s refreshing … that two young gals are doing this,” Liz Burks said. “We keep hearing so much about” the Central Missouri Humane Society, “how they need help and money.” Amanda and Libby “are not asking for a dime, just asking for a few minutes of your time.”
